Mali in My School

Melbourne Zoo's most famous Asian Elephant calf, Mali, is making her way out to 53 Victorian schools - in sculpture form as part of Mali in my School, a special 150th birthday event.

Mali in my School is the sister event to Melbourne Zoo's feature event for the 150th celebrations, Mali in the City which will see fifty full size fibreglass Mali lookalike sculptures designed and decorated by some of Australia's renowned artists.

Schools across Victoria are embracing the Mali herd. See if you can locate a school near you on the map below.

These fifty-three lucky schools will design, decorate and exhibit their very own mini-Mali fibreglass elephant. As we speak, students from across Victoria are being encouraged to come up with innovative, quirky, inspiring and environmentally-conscious designs that complement the Zoo's Fighting Extinction strategy.

The completed mini herd will also go 'on parade' at Melbourne Zoo during our official birthday month in October, alongside the fifty life-size Mali sculptures.

It's time to start getting excited about Mali in my School - ít's going to be mammoth!

Each participating school will receive a Mali in my School kit valued at over $1,200, which includes:

  • A 70cm fibreglass mini-Mali sculpture
  • A courier to pick up and deliver your Mali - proudly provided by the pet travel experts, Jet Pets
  • A Creativity Kit which includes guidelines for design and hints to help incorporate the project into your school curriculum
  • And a visit from a Melbourne Zoo Education Officer to assist with the project and to help spread the word about Zoos Victoria's Fighting Extinction commitment

We cannot fight extinction on our own!
We need the support of as many Victorian school students as possible. This means even if your school is not selected to decorate a mini-Mali sculpture, you can still help us fight the extinction of endangered species.

Schools not selected to take part in the Mali in My School project will receive a Fighting Extinction kit outlining Zoos Victoria's commitment to saving Victorian wildlife. Your school will also have the chance to enter a series of competitions, based on those twenty species we are determined to save!

Our mini-Mali fibreglass sculpture found herself on 'The Edge' at Eureka Tower's Skydeck recently.
