A female Orang-utan is the primary care giver; the male does not help with raise the young. Usually a female has her first infant at 12-15 years of age, with a gestation period similar to humans at nine months. Her young are then weaned at about three years and remain dependent on her for at least another five years. This slow reproductive rate makes orang-utan populations very vulnerable if the female death rate increases even slightly and numbers are slow to build up again after a population decline.
By Adopting an Animal you will be supporting captive breeding, conservation and research programs for endangered species. Zoos Victoria cares for more than 350 species of animals and 1500 botanical specimens. Many of these species are listed as endangered, some critically.
You can help by Adopting an Animal. Through your regular adoption donations you will help us fight extinction and provide the very best care for our wildlife.
